Point of the Proposed Technology

CFRTP can be produced by using (1) PEKK (polyether ketone ketone) resin (KEPSTAN®) and (2) in-situ polymerized acrylicmatrix (ELIUM®).(1)High heat resistance, high compressive strength CFRTP can be produced from KEPSTAN, while (2) by using ELIUM, goodcost balance, general-purpose CFRTP can be produced.(3) With addition of CNT, conductive CFRTP can be made.

Effect(s)

Creating new CFRTP useful for themanufacturing industry

Conventional Technology

Thermoset resin (epoxy resin) as the matrix resin

New Technology

New Thermoplastic Matrix
   (1) PEKK (polyether ketone ketone) resin
A unique PAEK polymer with controllable crystallizability
Excellent Heat Characteristic (+ 20 C vs PEEK)
Mechanical strength (+ 20% vs PEEK)
     Low residual stress
     Adhesiveness to metal
     Chemical resistance
     Flame-retardance
   (2) In-situ polymerized acrylic resin (Elium®)
Applicable to conventional CFRP processes
(RTM, pultrusion, infusion, etc. )
Strength equivalent to epoxy
High cost effectiveness
Recyclable
Colorable
30% to 50% lighter than similar parts made from steel demonstrates the same capacity
New filler
   (3) CNT (carbon nanotube)
Powder and various types of master batches
Colored fillerElium
Elium (r) is an in-situ polymerized thermoplastic matrix using acrylicresin as a base. As it is liquid, it can correspond to all the processes ofconventional thermoset resin. Composites after hardening have featuresof thermoplastic composites, so they can be thermally bent, welded, andrecycled.

Technology Deployment and Cooperation

Development Stage Commercialization Completed (already delivered: yes)
Intellectual Property Right Yes
Joint Researchers (their role) Companies producing fiber from (1)
Companies producing films or sheets from (1)
Companies using (1), (2) and/or (3)
Example of Application (1) Aircraft parts
(2) Truck body
(3) Antistatic wheels
Technical Problems For (1) CFRTP fabrication, currently examining the optimization of processing method suitable for new matrix materials at low cost and high productionefficiency. We are aiming to sell this material in various forms other than the current powder and pellet form.(2) is mainly committed to RTM and pultrusion method. Arkema is looking for co-development with manufacturers using RTM and pultrusion method.
Collaborator needed to Improve For the manufacturing of CFRTP, various forms of matrix material such as powder, fiber, film and sheet can beconsidered. We are looking for a partner who can process our material (1) into these forms. We are also looking for apartner who use these forms of material.
